Article: OUR FRESHWATER PEARLS
OUR FRESHWATER PEARLS
DAÏQUIRI was founded in Paris in 2022 out of a shared passion for natural pearls. Pearls are fascinating: born from nature, shaped by time, and cherished across centuries. They are timeless fashion icons—and unlike many materials, they never die.
As the French leader in pearl jewelry, we are committed to selecting only the finest white, near-round freshwater pearls for our creations. We invite you to explore the enchanting world of cultured pearls: their origins, their meaning, their surprising facts, and the beauty of the pearls we hand-picked for you.
ORIGINS & SYMBOLS OF PEARLS
Pearls are among the earliest gemstones ever discovered. Long before diamonds were cut or gold was smelted, pearls were treasured in their natural form. Ancient civilizations across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe saw them as precious miracles of the sea.
Across cultures, pearls have long carried powerful symbolism:
-
Purity – Their natural white glow has made them a symbol of innocence and simplicity.
-
Calm & Peace – Their soft, soothing radiance is associated with serenity and inner balance.
-
Longevity & Wisdom – In many traditions, pearls represent maturity, intuition, and experience.
In China and Japan especially, pearls have been adored for centuries. Emperors, empresses, and noble families considered them symbols of wealth and virtue. Japan later became a global pioneer in pearl cultivation, refining the techniques that allow cultured pearls to exist today. In 2025, our teams traveled to the beautiful and protected region of Ise-Shima in Japan, to discover the wonders of Japanese Akoya Pearls.
FUN FACTS ABOUT PEARLS
Pearls may look delicate, but their story is surprisingly complex—and full of fascinating details:
-
Pearls are officially gemstones
Even though they’re not mined like minerals, pearls are recognized as one of the world’s classic gemstones and registered in the official GIA: Gemological Institute of America. -
They are the only gems that come from a living organism
Every pearl grows inside a mollusk—making it literally a jewel born from life. -
Culturing pearls takes years
From growing the receiving oyster, to inserting the nucleus, to allowing the pearl to develop its layers, the full process usually takes 3 to 4 years. -
About 75% of cultured pearls never reach the market
Most oysters do not survive the growing phase, or the surgery phase, or do not produce pearls of sufficient quality—making pearls a particularly noble and rare treasure.
These facts make each pearl a true natural treasure, shaped by time, patience, and the delicate balance of nature.
OUR PEARLS
At DAÏQUIRI, our commitment to excellence starts with our materials. We use AAA-grade, near-round, white freshwater pearls carefully selected for their glow, shape, and strong rendition of natural light.
No two pearls are ever perfectly identical—and that’s what makes them special. Our pearls often carry tiny natural blemishes: subtle marks of their organic origin, to us, these are signs of authenticity and the unique character of each gem.
What truly sets them apart is their unmistakable shine. The luster of a genuine pearl—its deep, inner glow—is incomparable with plastic or imitation pearls. When light hits a real pearl, it doesn’t just reflect; it radiates.
CARE RECOMMENDATIONS
Pearls are extremely durable material, but they love care and attention. To preserve their glow for decades, here are a few simple guidelines:
-
Wear them often
Pearls love natural skin moisture—it helps maintain their luster. -
Avoid perfumes and chemicals
Apply fragrances and lotions before putting on your jewelry. -
Store them flat and separate
Keep your pearls away from sharp objects and harder gemstones that could scratch them.
With the right care, your pearls will accompany you through life—gracefully, naturally, and timelessly.
